first_imgPakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis on Wednesday said that despite the match fixing scandal his team was focussed on performing well during the rest of the ongoing England tour.Speaking ahead of the practice game on Thursday, Younis admitted that it will be a challenge to overcome the current controversy.”I will try to gear the team up again and make sure that we deliver the best we can in the next few games. It is a big challenge and I’ll try to make the best of it,” Younis said. The match fixing controversy began during the last Test of the five-match series in England. The visitors are now scheduled to play two Twenty-20 and five One-day series against the hosts. The first match is scheduled on September 5.Test team captain Salman Butt along with pacers Mohammed Amir and Mohammed Asif are facing questioning by the Pakistan Cricket Board over the spot fixing allegations.last_img read more

Bangladesh ask BCCI to invite its team for Inida tour

first_imgAfter showing India in the Asia Cup what they are capable of, Bangladesh, the youngest Test nation, is asking the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) once again to invite its team for a full tour.A defiant Bangladesh stunned India by five wickets on Friday to stay alive in the tournament and win unqualified praise.Former Bangladesh ODI player Athar Ali Khan is among those who can’t understand why the BCCI has continuously ignored the neighbouring country and have never invited it to India to play a Test series even after 13 years of attaining Test status.”It’s a big surprise for me. Look at the ICC Future Tours Programme for Test nations. It says that Test-playing nations have to play bilateral series on homeand- away basis, but for some reason India has not hosted Bangladesh at all since 1999, when we got Test status,” Khan, a television commentator for the Asia Cup, told Mail Today.”I don’t know why India doesn’t want to host Bangladesh. We’ve hosted India quite a few times, and are more than willing to host anybody in the future. I think ICC needs to look into this matter very seriously. It’s a question of why they haven’t and the answer is best known to them.”There is a feeling that Bangladesh is an unglamorous team and that the BCCI, worth over `2,500 crore, would suffer a monetary “loss” if it played a Test series at home against them.Bangladesh started playing ODIs before Test matches, and in 21 years, they have toured India only twice, with the last visit coming 14 years ago for a tri-nation series, against Kenya and the hosts.advertisementAfter that successive BCCI regimes – including that of Jagmohan Dalmiya who became ICC president in 1997 with Bangladesh’s help – seem to have completely ignored Bangladesh.”I find no reason why India should not host Bangladesh, a Test-playing nation. I’ve my fingers crossed and would like to see Bangladesh touring India in the near future for a full series, including Test matches, ODIs and probably T20s,” hoped Khan, 50, who was a team member on both tours.”If that happens, it’d give the Indian public to see international cricketers who have made a mark for themselves, like Tamim Iqbal, who made back-to-back Test centuries against England in 2010, top all-rounder Shakib-al-Hasan. They [BCCI officials] are depriving the Indian public of watching the Tamims and Shakibs. My humble request to the BCCI is to look into this matter and give us an opportunity to show our skills against the best in India.”Khan hoped that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would also take up the issue with the BCCI soon. “I’m sure authorities with the BCB and the BCCI would be talking to create that opportunity.I am more than sure that whenever BCB officials will have an opportunity to meet BCCI members they would put in a request, rather ask ICC members as to why we aren’t playing in India.”qaiser.ali@mailtoday.inlast_img
